Before becoming the first-ever American pope, Robert Prevost and his older brothers John and Louis grew up living “normal” lives like any other Midwestern family.
In a recent interview with EWTN, John Prevost recalled their childhood, mentioning that faith was ubiquitous in their upbringing: “Faith starts in the home, and then it just gradually would grow and develop. But I think it starts in the home. I know periodically our dad would take the Bible out and read Bible stories. We always prayed before dinner. Our parents always, every evening after dinner, prayed the rosary.”
John also said that his brother always wanted to become a priest and the whole family “that he had that calling”. About what it’s like being the pope’s brother, John mentioned that they communicate daily and that things have not changed between them for the most part: “One of the first questions I ask is, ‘Did you meet anyone famous today?’ And then on Wednesdays, he’s got that general audience with the crowds… I always ask, ‘Did you get any gifts?’”
