This Sunday, the Church celebrates the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe, also known as “Christ the King”. It is the last Sunday of the liturgical year.
The feast dates back to 1925, when Pope Pius XI published his encyclical Quas primas to respond to growing secularism and atheism. He foresaw that “thrusting Jesus Christ and his holy law” out of public life would result in discord among people and nations. The Solemnity of Christ the King reminds us that while governments come and go, Christ reigns as king forever. It also encourages us to live out our faith in public, doing what we can to make the laws in our society conform to the divine law of God.
On Monday, our Hispanic Outreach Manager, Dr. Guillermo Villa-Trueba, was invited to participate in an episode of “Semillitas de Fe”, the Spanish podcast of the Archdiocese of Dubuque, Iowa, to talk about the theological, historical, and political implications of Christ the King.
