Events to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the iconic Route 66 kicked off this week from Springfield, Missouri. The centennial celebration features a variety of events, including a concert, dedication of new landmarks, history exhibits, and a car show.

The events kicked off with a dedication of Birthplace Plaza, marking the spot in Springfield where the first telegram was sent to give Route 66 its name. The third hour of NBC’s Today Show broadcast live from the plaza on Thursday and was welcomed by Gov. Mike Kehoe, who presented the hosts with the official key of Route 66.

Route 66, the most famous stretch of highway in the nation, stretches from Chicago to Los Angeles, passing through eight states. More information about the centennial celebration of the iconic road can be found here.
