North Carolina Lawmakers Override Governor’s Veto on Bill Protecting Parental Rights, Women and Children

August 01, 2025

On Tuesday, North Carolina legislators voted to override Democratic Governor Josh Stein’s veto on House Bill 805, a wide-ranging measure that will strengthen parental rights, protect children from pornography, and reaffirm biological sex in state law. The House voted 72-48 to override the veto, and the Senate did the same thing later that day.

The legislation defines sex based on biology rather than gender identity, prohibits male and female students in K-12 schools from sharing overnight accommodations, and bans taxpayer funding of so-called “gender transition” procedures for prison inmates. It also allows detransitioners to sue medical providers for malpractice.

Additionally, the bill mandates age verification to access online pornography in an effort to protect children, and gives parents the right to access school libraries and block specific books from being loaned to their children.
