Mexican Government Projects Pro-abortion Imagery onto Mexico City’s Cathedral

July 21, 2025

The Archdiocese of Mexico City, one of the largest in the world with over 4 million faithful, issued a protest statement this week, after the government of Mexico City projected pro-abortion imagery onto the Cathedral’s main façade, as part of the video mapping show “Luminous Memory” that has been taking place in the city’s main square since July 11.

Even though the show is supposed to narrate the history of the Mexican capital, it focuses heavily on issues such as LGBT activism, pride parades, and the legalization of abortion. Among the imagery that has been displayed onto the Cathedral are women wearing green bandanas (the most prominent pro-abortion symbol in Latin America), feminist symbols, and signs that read “safe abortion.”

On Wednesday, Mexico City’s Department of Tourism issued a vague statement mentioning that there was never a deliberate intention to offend any religious group and indicated it would take some actions, but didn’t specify which. The show is scheduled to continue until July 27.
