Fr. Joe Detwiler was seventeen years old and driving his younger sister home from the family lake when he lost control of the car and hit a tree at forty miles an hour. It took rescuers forty-five minutes to extract Fr. Detwiler from the car and two hours to extract his sister. Fr. Detwiler had a severe brain injury and was in a coma for seventy-four days.
Two years later, he was able to enter the seminary and fulfill his dream of becoming a priest. You can read more at the St. Louis Review or at KSDK, or watch him on the Archdiocese of St. Louis YouTube video: A Priesthood of Hope.
