Baby Found in Safe Haven Box in O’Fallon

September 26, 2025

A newborn infant was anonymously left in the O’Fallon Fire Station “Safe Haven Baby Box” on September 13. The baby was in the Safe Haven Box for less than one minute.

Monica Kelsey, the founder of Safe Haven Baby Box, said the child’s mother had been on the phone with officials in the moments leading up to her arrival at the fire station. Kelsey praised the firefighters, saying, “they followed every protocol. They did it flawlessly, and they did it lovingly.”

Kelsy defended the mother’s decision to surrender the child. Kelsey said, “It is pretty amazing when a parent says, ‘I want what is best for my child, and it is not me,’ and that this parent trusted this fire department to take care of her child.”

The baby is described as perfectly healthy and being cared for by a foster family, and will be adopted. There are currently eight Safe Haven Baby Boxes in Missouri. In the last two weeks, four babies have been found in Safe Haven Baby Boxes nationwide.
