What is an Indulgence and How Can We Obtain One this Jubilee Year?

March 28, 2025

For centuries, an important element of holy year celebrations has been the granting of indulgences, which the Code of Canon Law describes as “the remission before God of temporal punishment for sins whose guilt is already forgiven, which a properly disposed member of the Christian faithful gains under certain and defined conditions.” In other words, even after a person is forgiven for sin through sacramental confession, the damage remains and must be repaired; indulgences are a gift from God, through His Church, to repair it. You can read more on indulgences here.

During the Jubilee Holy Year 2025, Catholics may obtain the plenary indulgence, which remits all temporal punishment for sins committed (as opposed to “partial indulgence,” which remits some temporal punishment). In order to do so, we must go to confession and receive the Eucharist, pray for the intentions of the Holy Father, and make a pilgrimage to a jubilee site, either in Rome, a place designated by the local bishop, or a national shrine.

We invite you to visit the links below to find out the sites that each diocese has designated as local pilgrimage sites in Missouri:
