USCCB Releases Diocesan Survey on Parishes and Hispanic Ministry

August 23, 2024

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) just released a new resource titled “Diocesan Survey on Parishes and Hispanic/Latino Ministry”. In April 2024, a survey was sent to the 14 US Episcopal regions and, by mid-August, all 175 dioceses responded to the survey. Dioceses reported a total number of 16,279 parishes, 28 percent of which have Masses in Spanish (4,479). 17% of parishes admitted having Hispanic presence or ministry but no Mass in Spanish, while 55 percent of them declared not having significant Hispanic presence.

Missouri’s four dioceses reported the following: the Archdiocese of St. Louis has 137 parishes, 12 of which have Masses in Spanish; the Diocese of Jefferson City has 92 parishes, 13 of which have Masses in Spanish and 12 of which have Hispanic presence but no Mass in Spanish; the Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph has 80 parishes, 10 of which have Masses in Spanish and 70 of which have Hispanic presence but no Mass in Spanish; and the Diocese of Springfield-Cape Girardeau has 66 parishes, 16 of which have Masses in Spanish.
