For the first time in history, a pontiff will participate in the G7 summit, which gathers the leaders of some of the most powerful industrialized democracies; they will meet this week (June 13-15) in southern Italy. Pope Francis has confirmed that he will be holding bilateral meetings with nine world leaders, including U.S. President Joe Biden, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, and newly reelected Indian PM Narendra Modi.
Pope Francis will speak at Session VI on the ethics of artificial intelligence, a topic that was also the theme of his 2024 peace message, in which he recommended global leaders to adopt an international treaty to regulate its development and use. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni stated that she is “convinced that the presence of His Holiness will make a decisive contribution to the definition of a regulatory, ethical, and cultural framework for artificial intelligence.”
