On April 8, Pope Francis announced that he has named Bishop W. Shawn McKnight, S.Th.D., as the fifth archbishop of Kansas City in Kansas. Archbishop-designate McKnight is the successor of Archbishop Joseph F. Naumann, 75, who has led the Archdiocese of Kansas City, Kansas, for twenty years.
Archbishop-designate McKnight will move back to his home state and take on his new role on May 27, 2025. He has been the Bishop of the Diocese of Jefferson City since 2018.
Archbishop-designate McKnight will continue to serve as apostolic administrator of the Jefferson City diocese while preparing to be installed as archbishop in Kansas City on Tuesday, May 27. After that time, the College of Consultors in the Diocese of Jefferson City will elect a temporary administrator to serve until a new bishop is installed after being appointed by the pope.
