As we prepare to celebrate Veterans Day on November 11, one film is putting the spotlight on veterans who were military chaplains and the role they play in combat situations. The film Fighting Spirit: A Combat Chaplain’s Journey, opening in select cities on Nov. 8, highlights them, especially Father Emil Kapaun and Protestant chaplain Justin Roberts.
When the remains of prisoner of war and Army combat chaplain Emil Kapaun (perhaps the Vatican’s next saint) are identified after 70 years, much of our nation is captivated by their journey home. As a younger former chaplain unexpectedly embarks on his own journey to greet them, he becomes inspired by the untold stories of the 419 U.S. military chaplain heroes who’ve given their lives for this unique calling. Fighting Spirit becomes a journey of healing, a moving boost for the cause of Chaplain Kapaun, and a triumphant ode to military chaplains whose presence with troops can bring them strength, courage and healing. As we take the time to thank our veterans, take a moment to say a prayer for them, their families, and our current troops. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops offers this prayer for Veterans Day.
