Special Session on Tax Cuts Underway, Senators Propose Other Plans

On Wednesday, a special session called by the governor got underway. On the first day, senators filed a wide range of proposals, including 10 additional plans to cut the state’s income tax. Governor Mike Parson’s proposed legislation would cut the state’s income tax from 5.3% to 4.8%. The plan would cost $700 million. He also wants lawmakers to extend agricultural tax credits. Among the 22 bills filed Wednesday, Republican Rep. Ron Hicks resubmitted his bill that would legalize recreational marijuana in the state, before voters get their say on Amendment 3. Governor Parson has already said he will not expand the special session, making it unlikely for him to sign any of the newly proposed bills.
