This week, the Senate Government Reform Committee heard several bills that would limit consumer protections on purchases of household merchandise. The bills attempt to curb lawsuit abuse, but unfortunately also add troubling language to current Missouri statutes that protect Missouri consumers from deceptive or unfair trade practices. The statutes at issue have been used by the Missouri Attorney General's office over the years to protect consumers from these harmful practices. The Missouri Catholic Conference offered written testimony in opposition to many of the proposed changes. The committee is expected to vote the bill out in the coming weeks for further debate on the Senate floor. Stay tuned for more as these bills move further along in the process.
