Mike Parson will be inaugurated as the 57th governor of Missouri on Monday, January 11 on the South Lawn of the Missouri State Capitol building, beginning his first full four-year term as our state's top leader. The ceremony will begin at 11:30 and will include the swearing in of Lt. Gov. Mike Kehoe, Attorney General Eric Schmitt, Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft and Treasurer Scott Fitzpatrick. Due to the ongoing pandemic, the event will look different this year, with the Capitol building serving as a cold January backdrop to the outdoor proceedings, and no evening ball to follow. However, the event is still open to the public, but social distancing and mask wearing is encouraged. The inauguration kicks off festivities to celebrate Missouri's Bicentennial, which we highlighted in the last MCC Messenger of 2020. Click here for more details about Inauguration Day.

Ahead of inauguration day, the Missouri General Assembly kicked off its 2021 legislative session on Wednesday, January 6. The proceedings included the swearing in of House Speaker Rob Vescovo (R-Arnold), a Catholic legislator who resides in Jefferson County. Rep. Vescovo pledged to work across party lines during his term as Speaker of the House, and announced his priorities, which include education, and a focus on tax credits for parents seeking to adopt or foster. Rep. Vescovo is adopted, and wants to make the process more accessible for families who might not see adoption as an option due to financial restrictions. Read more about Vescovo's priorities and listen to clips from his address in this article.
