The Mississippi river is expected to crest at 45.8 ft later this week, 15 ft above flood stage and the second highest level ever recorded, surpassed only by the great 1993 flood (49.5 ft on August 1, 1993). Other area rivers are expected to crest at historic levels as well, swamping many river towns as the Missouri heads into the summer months. These aerial photos from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch show the extent of the Mississippi river flooding.
