Hurricane Dorian Crushes the Bahamas, Makes Landfall in Carolinas

Hurricane Dorian destroyed the Bahamas as it hovered for hours just off the coast of Grand Bahama island. Dorian was a Category 5 hurricane when it struck Great Abaco island. It then lingered over the other islands as it slowly moved eastward toward the U.S. coastline. "We are in the midst of one of the greatest national crises in our country's history," said Hurbert Minnis, Prime Minister of the Bahamas. "Marsh Habour [on Great Bahama island] has suffered, I would estimate, in excess of 60% damage to their homes," said Minnis. "The Mud, as we know, has been completely destroyed or decimated," he added, referring to a shantytown in the area.

Cardinal Daniel DiNardo, President of the USCCB, asked Catholics to support the relief efforts by making a donation to either Catholic Relief Services or Catholic Charities. Links to these organizations can be found in his statement.

Dorian made landfall this morning over Cape Hatteras in North Carolina as a Category 1 storm.
