The Senate Committee on Seniors, Families, and Children passed a bill that would impose new sanctions on recipients who receive food stamps but fail to comply with federal work requirements. The committee passed the bill by a vote of 4-1. SB 4, sponsored by Sen. David Sater (R-Cassville), has the potential of reducing food assistance for more than 51,000 children for up to six months. Currently, 14 percent of Missouri households face food insecurity. Opponents argue that taking away food stamps from families will put children at risk and place more burdens on food pantries. Supporters say they want to encourage more parents to participate in work activities in order to receive family food stamp benefits. SB 4 now moves to the Senate for full debate.
