First COVID-19 Vaccines Distributed in Missouri

Vial

This week, the state began its initial rollout of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine. Missouri has received over 51,000 doses of the vaccine and officials expect additional shipments next week. In addition, Moderna's COVID-19 vaccine is on track to be approved for use in the coming weeks. A Food and Drug Administration (FDA) advisory board voted on Thursday to approve Moderna's COVID-19 vaccine for emergency use authorization. Moderna now waits for a formal emergency use authorization from the FDA, which could come as early as today. Such authorization would allow vaccinations with the Moderna vaccine to begin early next week.

The COVID-19 vaccines will be distributed in phases, with the first doses provided to long-term care facility residents and staff and patient-facing healthcare workers. The state has established a website with information on the vaccine rollout, including a breakdown of the distribution phases and an FAQ. Some have had questions as to whether the use of the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines is morally permissible. Bishop Kevin Rhodes, Chairman of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops' (USCCB) Committee on Doctrine, and Bishop Joseph Naumann, Chairman of the USCCB Committee on Pro-Life Activities, recently issued guidance to the faithful regarding the moral permissibility of utilizing the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, along with the AstraZeneca vaccine that is also nearing approval. The bishops of Missouri also recently provided guidance on COVID-19 vaccines. We encourage all of our members to review both documents.
