Federal Government Sets Five More Executions Before January 20

The federal government has set five execution dates, including the only woman currently on federal death row, to be executed over the next two months. The last execution is slated to take place just five days before the new administration takes office on January 20.

If all five planned executions proceed, a total of 13 federal prisoners will have been executed by lethal injection between July 2020 and January 2021. The 10 federal executions in 2020 are more than in any previous single year in the last two centuries, according to the Death Penalty Information Center. Last week the Justice Department published a rule that would allow other methods for capital punishment including firing squads, lethal gas, and electrocutions. The new rule is set to go into effect in 30 days instead of the generally allotted 60 days. The U.S. is the only Western democracy that still uses capital punishment.
