Execution Date for Russell Bucklew Set

Missouri Supreme Court

The state of Missouri has set an execution date of Oct. 1, 2019, for Russell Bucklew. Bucklew had previously received two last-minute reprieves in 2014 and in 2018 over concerns about his rare medical condition. The U.S. Supreme justices ruled 5-4 in April against Bucklew after he had argued lethal injection could cause a tumor in his throat to burst and make him choke on his own blood; Bucklew argued that would violate the Constitution's ban on cruel and unusual punishment.

Missouri uses an injection of the drug pentobarbital for executions. Bucklew has proposed that the State execute him by having him breathe pure nitrogen gas through a mask, but Missouri officials said no state has ever carried out an execution as Bucklew suggested. Missouri's last execution was in January, 2017.
