On Tuesday, Planned Parenthood removed its president, Dr. Leana Wen, after only eight months into the job. According to statements by Dr. Wen, the removal was a result of an internal disagreement as to the proper mission of the abortion provider. In a series of tweets on Tuesday, Dr. Wen reiterated her view that "the best way to protect abortion care is to be clear that it is not a political issue but a health care one..." However, according to Wen, Planned Parenthood's board "has determined that the priority of Planned Parenthood moving forward is to double down on abortion rights advocacy."
Planned Parenthood's board also voted on Tuesday to appoint Alexis McGill Johnson, the co-founder of the "anti-bias research group" the Perception Institute, to temporarily replace Dr. Wen.
