In the upcoming week, HB 564, sponsored by Rep. Derek Grier (R-Chesterfield), will likely by debated on the Senate floor. This legislation, known as the Fresh Start Act, makes getting a professional license more accessible for ex-offenders. An individual could no longer be disqualified from getting a license unless the criminal conviction directly relates to the duties and responsibilities of the job. The licensing authority must explicitly list the convictions that would disqualify a person from receiving a license.
Many groups are behind this legislation that would give ex-offenders a chance at getting a decent job and establishing roots in the community. The bill protects public safety while allowing people a fresh start. More details with be highlighted in an Action Alert on HB 564 that we will be sending out soon!
