Bishops Strongly Commend Administration for Taking Action to Enforce Religious Protection Law

Cross

Last Friday at the March for Life, the Trump Administration announced that it was taking steps to enforce the Weldon Amendment, a federal law that prohibits discrimination by states against health insurance plans that do not cover abortion. Since 2014, the state of California had been forcing all employers, including religious employers, to provide for elective abortions in their health insurance plans.

Archbishop Joseph F. Naumann, chairman of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops' (USCCB) Committee on Pro-Life Activities, and Bishop George V. Murry, S.J., chairman of the Committee for Religious Liberty, issued the following statement commending the administration for enforcing the Weldon Amendment.

Calling California's requirement "abhorrent, unjust and illegal," the bishops praised the announcement as "extraordinarily good news for the right to life, conscientious objection, religious freedom and the rule of law." The bishops went on to strongly commend the administration for enforcing the federal law and correcting the "supreme injustice to the people and employers of California."

The bishops' full statement can be found on the USCCB website.
