Bishops Commemorate Migration Week: January 6-12

New Us Citizens

Saturday marks the end of Migration Week 2019. Migration week is an opportunity for the Catholic Church to reflect on the circumstances confronting migrants, including immigrants, refugees, children, and victims and survivors of human trafficking. The theme for this year's migration week is "Building Communities of Welcome."

The Catechism of the Catholic Church acknowledges the right, and even the duty, of civil authorities to defend their citizens against an aggressor. (CCC No. 2265) Church teaching also states, however, "more prosperous nations are obliged, to the extent they are able, to welcome the foreigner in search of security and the means of livelihood which he cannot find in his country of origin." (CCC No. 2241)

The U.S. immigration system is broken and currently creates long periods of forced family separation. It can take decades for legal permanent residents to reunify with immediate family members from countries like Mexico and the Philippines. In addition, political instability in Central America in countries like Brazil, Venezuela, and Honduras has caused many to flee in search of security and stability. Historically, the U.S. has been a refuge for displaced persons, but the number of refugees being resettled in the U.S. as decreased significantly under the Trump administration.

The MCC encourages its network to learn more about this important and difficult issue by reviewing these materials prepared for Migration Week.
