The army corps of engineers is warning that if current forecasts hold, mid-Missouri could see flooding again in the spring of 2020. Winter weather forecasts for central Missouri call for normal winter precipitation, but those for Montana, as well as North and South Dakota, are calling for above-average winter precipitation rates, meaning the upper Missouri river basin will likely see runoff from already saturated soil in the area.
The Army corps intends to release larger than average amounts of water from the Gavins Point Dam in the Dakotas through December to evacuate retained flood reserves and to prepare for spring rains and snowfall. A more updated report will be released in February, but the corps is letting people know to be ready for flooding in the spring based upon current reserves and expected winter precipitation.
