Assisted Suicide in the U.S. and Canada

New York and Massachusetts currently have legislation that would legalize assisted suicide in each state. The bill in New York is entitled Medical Aid In Dying and would allow a terminally ill person to request medication that would end their life. Massachusetts has the End of Life Options Act that would also allow a terminally ill patient to request medication to end their life.

The Canadian Medical Association Journal recently published a report stating that if Canada fully implemented assisted suicide, the Canadian health care system could save between $37.4 and $136.8 million per year.

According to the Catholic News Agency: The Canadian Parliament legalized assisted suicide, under the name of medical assistance in dying (MAID), in 2016. The Parliament again passed another bill in 2021 that further expanded the country’s assisted suicide laws, allowing those suffering from exclusively mental health problems to also apply for MAID.
