Last year, abortion was the leading cause of death throughout the world for, at least, the fifth time in a row: over 44.6 million abortions were performed in 2023 alone. By comparison, communicable diseases, the second cause of death, accounted for 13 million fatalities, followed by cancer at 8 million and smoking-related complications at 5 million.
According to statistics compiled by Worldometer, a reference website that analyzes, validates, and aggregates data from thousands of international sources to provide counters and real-time statistics for diverse topics, around 60.6 million people died in 2023. However, this figure omits abortion as a form of death. When including it, the total number of deaths rises to roughly 100 million, and abortion accounts for more than 40% of those.
Tragically, the 44.6 million figure is a conservative estimate, and the actual number of abortions could be even higher. The World Health Organization (WHO), in a November 2021 fact sheet available on its official website, brags that “around 73 million induced abortions take place worldwide every year” and that 61% of all unintended pregnancies and 29% of all pregnancies end in induced abortion.
